Micante Sangiovese IGT Toscana Organic: the soul of Tuscany in your glass
Micante Sangiovese IGT Toscana Organic is a still red wine made from 100% organically farmed Sangiovese grapes, crafted by the MaremmAlta winery in Gavorrano (Grosseto), in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. With 13% alcohol by volume, aged exclusively in stainless steel and showing a bright ruby-red colour, it captures the freshness and varietal purity of Tuscany's signature grape. It is supplied in cases of 12 bottles of 0.75 L, ideal for restaurant wine lists and by-the-glass service.
What Sangiovese is
Sangiovese is the most widely planted grape variety in Italy and the backbone of the great Tuscan reds, from Chianti to Brunello di Montalcino and the wines of the Maremma. Its name, derived from the Latin sanguis Jovis (the blood of Jupiter), points to a centuries-old history rooted in central Italy. Sangiovese delivers vibrant red-fruit aromatics, fresh acidity and firm yet fine tannins, qualities that make it a natural companion to food and a benchmark for Italian gastronomy worldwide.
The Tuscan Maremma and the Monteregio terroir
The Maremma is the coastal strip of southern Tuscany, a land of Mediterranean scrub, sea breezes and mineral-rich soils. Micante is born in the Casteani area near Gavorrano, at the foot of the Colline Metallifere within the Monteregio district, a lesser-known but rising corner of Tuscany. Here the combination of warm days, cooling coastal air and stony soils gives Sangiovese ripe fruit and bright freshness at once.
The producer: MaremmAlta
MaremmAlta is a winery in Gavorrano, in the province of Grosseto, run by Stefano Rizzi, a long-time wine professional who founded the estate to make wine his own way. The Sangiovese vines are 10 to 15 years old and farmed under certified organic agriculture. Ageing takes place solely in stainless steel, a choice that preserves the integrity and immediacy of the fruit rather than masking it with oak.
Tasting notes
The wine pours a bright ruby red. The nose offers ripe red fruit, cherry and plum lifted by delicate floral hints. On the palate it is fresh and lively, with soft tannins and a persistent finish. It is a vegan wine and contains sulfites, as is standard for wine.
Professional uses in the kitchen
Serve at 16-18 degrees C. Micante Sangiovese is a versatile food wine for professional kitchens: pour it with pici al ragu and pappardelle al cinghiale, with roasts and mixed grills, with grilled red meats and braised dishes. It is excellent alongside aged sheep's-milk cheeses such as Pecorino di Pienza and boards of Tuscan cured meats. By the glass it works as a house red that flatters pizza, pasta and antipasti alike.
Pairings
Build a Tuscan board around it: Pecorino di Pienza, Salame Toscano, crostini and a wooden serving board. For mains, pair with bistecca-style grilled beef, sausages, lamb or hearty tomato-based pasta. Its fresh acidity also cuts through the richness of cheese-laden dishes.
