What Lumachine Are
Lumachine are a classic short, curved format from the Neapolitan tradition: a small "snail" shell with a cavity that traps sauce, vegetables and small pieces of meat. Pasta di Gragnano IGP
Gragnano, on the hills above the Sorrento peninsula in the province of Naples, has been the home of pasta since the 16th century. Its mild, ventilated microclimate made it the ideal place to dry pasta in the open air. Since 2013 the Pasta di Gragnano name is protected at European level as IGP: it must be produced within the municipality of Gragnano, using only durum wheat semolina and water from the local aquifers, bronze-drawn and slow-dried.
The Producer: Pastificio Di Martino
Pastificio Di Martino was founded in Gragnano in 1912 by Giuseppe Di Martino. Today a Benefit Corporation based in Via Castellammare, it is one of the historic guardians of Gragnano pasta and a reference name for professional kitchens worldwide. The house signature is bronze drawing combined with slow, low-temperature drying that preserves aroma and protein structure.
The Barbie Special Edition
The Lumachine belong to the Di Martino × Barbie special line, launched in 2021 to celebrate the value of food and of time spent together as a family. Part of the proceeds supports Food for Soul, the non-profit founded by chef Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore against food waste and food insecurity. The line keeps the same Gragnano IGP pasta quality in a collectible pink livery.
